Recueillie au début du XXe S. dans le Summerset, cette ballade provient très certainement d’Écosse et daterait du XVIe S.
Ce célèbre thème a souvent été repris et rebaptisé dans différents styles et à différentes époques. On peut citer Renaud qui en a fait sa “Ballade irlandaise“…
Pour des versions plus proches de l’originale, on a pu entendre Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger… Bref, il y en a des centaines de versions mais s’il en est une qui touche particulièrement, c’est à Maura O’Connell qu’on la doit… On regrette un peu l’arrangement “classique” mais sa voix nous emporte quoi qu’il en soit !
